For Tesla owners

Your shop uses GuestLot. Here is what that means.

You are dropping your Tesla off and someone asked you to authorize an app called GuestLot. It is worth ninety seconds of reading, so here is the whole thing: what you are granting, what the shop can see, what it cannot do, and how it ends. If you would rather see the shop’s side of it, how it works walks through the same visit from behind the counter.

AUTO-REVOKE

Access is a window with an end time on it, set to your pickup. It closes on schedule whether or not anyone remembers to close it.

What you authorize

A scoped, time-boxed connection — nothing more.

You approve GuestLot on Tesla's own third-party app screen, the same place every connected app lives. You are not handing over your Tesla account, your password, or your car.

  • The window starts when you approve and ends at the pickup time your shop entered.
  • Guest Mode is on for shop jobs, so the shop cannot add keys or change your PIN.
  • You can end it yourself at any moment, without asking the shop, from the Tesla app.
  • No GuestLot account, no app, no password to create.
  • Nothing continues after pickup. There is no ongoing subscription to your car.

What the shop sees

Counts and timestamps. Not a map.

This is the part most owners actually care about, so it is worth being exact. GuestLot shows the shop a short list of events while your car is in their care.

What the shop sees

  • Whether the car is on their lot or off it, with times.
  • Lot exits after their posted hours, which raise an alert.
  • Miles driven during the visit.
  • Supercharger sessions billed to your account, so nobody quietly charges on your dime.
  • Battery level and whether the car is locked.

What it never sees

  • No live map. Nobody at the shop can watch a dot move across a screen.
  • No route history, no addresses you visited, no trip log.
  • No cabin camera, no microphone, no Sentry footage.
  • No access to your Tesla account, contacts, or payment methods.
  • No ability to add a driver, add a key, or change your PIN to Drive.

If you want the technical version of why those limits exist, our security and limits page is written for people who like reading the fine print, and give a shop access to your Tesla walks through the authorization screen scope by scope.

How it ends

Three ways, and two of them need nothing from you.

The shop hands the car back. An advisor taps hand back at pickup. Access is revoked in that same second and your receipt is generated.

The pickup time arrives. If the shop gets busy and forgets, the window closes on its own. Expiring is the default behavior, not a fallback.

You revoke it. Tesla account → Security → Third-Party Apps → revoke GuestLot, or delete the key at the car under Controls → Locks. Immediate either way, and you do not owe anyone an explanation. Everything recorded before that moment stays on the record; nothing new is read after it.

Your receipt

What you get when you pick the car up.

A text message with a link. No login, no app, no account. It opens to the record of your visit and it stays at that link afterward.

The receipt lists the shop, the exact window your access was open, the miles driven, any lot exits after hours, any Supercharger sessions billed to you, and the moment the shop’s access ended. Where a reading was never received — because the car was asleep, or because you left a key card instead of authorizing — it says not recorded. We do not print a zero and hope you read it as good news.

Nothing on the receipt can be edited after it closes, by the shop or by us. That is what makes it worth reading.

Questions owners ask

Straight answers, no pressure

Is it safe to authorize a shop to access my Tesla?

Authorizing GuestLot is safe in the sense that matters: it is scoped, it is time-boxed, it does not involve giving anyone your Tesla password, and you can end it yourself at any moment from your Tesla account or at the car. It is not a transfer of ownership or a permanent key, and it does not let the shop add drivers or change your PIN.

Can the shop see where my car is?

The shop sees whether your car is on their lot or off it, with timestamps, plus Supercharger sessions and battery level. There is no live map anywhere in GuestLot, for staff or for anyone else. Nobody at the shop can watch your car move.

How do I revoke access?

In your Tesla account, go to Security, then Third-Party Apps, and revoke GuestLot — or delete GuestLot's key from the car's Controls, then Locks screen. Either works immediately. It takes effect immediately and you do not need to tell the shop first. Access also ends on its own at the pickup time, and again when the shop hands your car back.

Do I have to install anything or make an account?

No. You authorize from the Tesla app you already have, and your receipt arrives as a link in a text message. There is no GuestLot app, no GuestLot password, and no account to delete later.

What if I just leave my key card instead?

That is your choice and the shop will handle it. Understand the tradeoff: an NFC key card is full drive access with no record of who used it, and it cannot be wiped remotely. With a key card there is no telemetry, so your receipt will say not recorded where the driving and charging lines would be.

What does the shop actually get out of this?

A record. If your car leaves their lot at one in the morning, they find out that night instead of arguing with you at pickup. Shops that hold your car are responsible for it, and a timestamped record protects them the same way it reassures you.
