Tesla Valet Mode vs Service Mode at a shop
Valet Mode is a restriction profile the owner or an authorized app can toggle: 70 mph cap, limited power, frunk and glovebox locked. Service Mode is a technician state entered only on the car’s touchscreen or over a cable, and it gates the calibrations that collision work depends on.
No app can set Service Mode — Tesla’s Fleet API has no such command. An authorized app can only see it. Meanwhile Valet Mode, the thing software can set, is the wrong default for exactly the shops that hold Teslas longest.
What does Tesla Valet Mode actually restrict?
Valet Mode caps the car at 70 mph, limits power, locks the frunk and glovebox, disables HomeLink, voice commands, and Autopilot conveniences, hides driver profiles and the key list, blocks new Bluetooth and WiFi pairing, and prevents changing Mobile Access settings. It is a loaner-parking mode, not a shop mode.

Read that list as a loaner-car feature and it makes sense. Read it as a shop feature and the problem is obvious: half of it protects the owner’s data, and the other half gets in the way of the work.
Why is Valet Mode wrong for PPF, wrap, and collision work?
Because those jobs need every opening on the car available all day. Valet Mode locks the frunk and glovebox, and installers are in and out of the frunk, trunk, and all four doors continuously while laying film or fitting panels. Turning Valet on for a film job trades a small speed benefit for a full day of friction.
Not going to work, they will need to open all the doors, frunk, and trunks all the time to install PPF and coating.
That is why Valet is never the default in GuestLot’s shipped job policies — not for tint, not for PPF, not for wrap, not for collision. Guest Mode is on by default instead, which keeps staff out of the owner’s keys and PINs without locking the panels the crew has to open.
Can an app put a Tesla into Service Mode?
No. Tesla's Fleet API vehicle-commands list contains roughly 60 commands — lock, unlock, actuate trunk, open the charge port, honk, flash, remote start, set valet mode, set sentry mode, window control, guest mode, and more — and none of them enter or exit Service Mode. No third-party app, and no shop's software, can put a car into Service Mode over the network.
The full command surface is published at developer.tesla.com: door_lock and door_unlock, actuate_trunk, charge_port_door_open and _close, honk_horn, flash_lights, remote_start_drive, set_valet_mode and reset_valet_pin, set_sentry_mode, set_pin_to_drive, window_control, guest_mode, trigger_homelink. Note what is present — set_valet_mode — and what is absent. There is no set_service_mode, and there never has been.
Any vendor that tells a shop it can flip a customer’s Tesla into Service Mode from a tablet is describing something Tesla does not offer. We publish this on our limits page for the same reason.
How does a Tesla enter Service Mode?
On the car's touchscreen: Controls > Software, hold the word MODEL for about two seconds, then type the password 'service'. The other path is a cable-connected Toolbox 3 session. Both require a person physically at the vehicle; there is no network route in.
Tesla documents the touchscreen sequence in its own service manual (service.tesla.com). For independent shops, the cabled path runs through Toolbox 3, whose subscription price for independents dropped roughly 76% — from about $3,000 per year to about $700 per year (Drive Tesla Canada). That price move is a large part of why more independent shops can take Tesla work at all.
Can software at least see whether a car is in Service Mode?
Yes. Tesla Fleet Telemetry streams a read-only vehicle_state.service_mode boolean, so an authorized app can tell that a car is in Service Mode and when that changed. Visibility without control is the honest description of what any third-party app can do here.
Tesla’s Fleet Telemetry available-data reference lists vehicle_state.service_mode among the streamable signals (developer.tesla.com). In practice that means a shop can be told when a car entered Service Mode and when it left — useful on a collision job where the calibration step is part of the file — but the flipping of the switch stays with the technician.
Does a body shop need Service Mode?
Often, yes. Service Mode gates the calibration routines required after windshield, bumper, sensor, and structural work, and Tesla instructs body shops to recalibrate whenever a bumper is removed and reinstalled. That is a technician-at-the-car task, not something a scheduling tool or a custody app can trigger.
Capability is the constraint here, not policy. Industry survey work by PartsTech and OEC across 752 shops found only about 3% of technicians proficient in EV maintenance, fewer than 10% qualified for EV battery work, and a quarter of general repair shops doing no EV work at all (PartsTech). Shops that can do the calibration work have a real advantage; the ones that cannot should say so before the car is on the lift.

The practical rule
- Guest Mode on for every custody job. It keeps staff out of keys, PINs, and profiles without locking panels.
- Valet Mode only when the owner specifically asks for a speed cap — realistically, a short tint appointment.
- Service Mode only by a qualified technician at the vehicle, only when the repair calls for it, and logged as part of the job file.
- Never promise a customer that software will lock the car down. Say what the software can see, and who is accountable for the rest.
