Tesla Valet Mode: what a valet stand needs to know

Valet Mode is the feature Tesla built for exactly your situation: a stranger driving the car a short distance with the owner’s permission. It caps speed at 70 mph, locks the frunk and glovebox, hides Home and Work destinations, hides driver profiles and the key list, and disables HomeLink and voice commands.

It is not an immobilizer and not a theft control. A key card still drives the car, PIN to Drive is switched off while Valet Mode is on, and what Sentry Mode does during a valet window is genuinely unsettled. Here is the whole surface, with the parts nobody can confirm marked as such.

What does Tesla Valet Mode restrict?

Valet Mode caps the car at 70 mph and reduces drive power, locks the frunk and the glovebox, hides saved Home and Work navigation destinations, hides driver profiles and the list of paired keys, disables HomeLink and voice commands, blocks new WiFi and Bluetooth pairing, and locks the Mobile Access setting so it cannot be changed. It is a restriction profile applied to a car that still drives normally.

Does Valet Mode require the valet to enter a PIN?

No — the opposite. Tesla's owner's manual states that in Valet mode the car can be driven without the need for the valet to enter a driving PIN, and that the PIN to Drive setting is disabled whenever Valet mode is active. The two features are mutually exclusive by design: PIN to Drive exists to stop a stranger from driving the car, and Valet Mode exists to hand it to one.

Tesla’s Model S owner’s manual puts it directly: “In Valet mode, Model S can be driven without the need for the valet to enter a driving PIN. The PIN to Drive setting is disabled whenever Valet mode is active” (tesla.com/ownersmanual). Guests who use PIN to Drive daily sometimes assume they can stack the two. They cannot, and an attendant waiting at the curb for a PIN that will never be needed is a slow handoff built on a misunderstanding.

Can the glovebox be opened while Valet Mode is on?

Only with a Glovebox PIN. Tesla's manual states that using a Glovebox PIN allows the glovebox to be opened even when the car is in Valet mode. So the glovebox lock has an owner-controlled override, and an attendant who cannot open a glovebox for a guest is seeing the feature work as designed rather than a fault.

The same manual states: “Using a Glovebox PIN allows the glovebox to be opened even when Model S is in Valet mode.” Worth knowing at a stand, because a guest who left a garage remote or a wallet in the glovebox will ask, and the honest answer is that it depends on a setting only they control.

Can an owner turn Valet Mode on after handing the car over?

Yes. The owner can enable Valet Mode from the Tesla mobile app any time the car is in Park, including after an attendant has already driven away with it. In the car, the path is the driver profile icon on the touchscreen, then Valet Mode, then a four-digit PIN. Enabling it late applies the restrictions from that moment forward rather than retroactively.

This is the most useful fact on the page for an operator. A guest who forgot to enable Valet Mode at the curb can enable it from the table, and one who dislikes the frunk lock can turn it off the same way. It also means the mode is not something your stand controls or should promise — it belongs to the owner, and a policy that says “we recommend Valet Mode” is more honest than one that says “your car is in Valet Mode.”

Does a Tesla key card still work in Valet Mode?

Yes. A physical NFC key card unlocks and drives the car normally while Valet Mode is on. This is widely documented by owners rather than spelled out in Tesla's own documentation, so treat it as field knowledge. Practically it means the card and the mode are independent decisions: the card is the credential, and Valet Mode is the restriction profile applied to whoever holds one.

This is the gap most valet policies miss. Valet Mode restricts what a driver can do; it does not restrict who can drive. Any credential that worked before still works, and an NFC card in particular cannot be remote-wiped and keeps no usage trail. If a card is what changes hands at your podium, the card is your custody record — which is to say you do not have one.

Does Valet Mode turn Sentry Mode off?

Nobody can answer that cleanly. Field reports conflict — owners describe different Sentry behavior during Valet Mode, and the long-running Tesla Motors Club thread on the question never resolved it — and Tesla publishes no canonical statement about the interaction. The Tesla Motors Club thread asking precisely this question ran for years without a settled answer (teslamotorsclub.com). Owners report different behavior across cars and software versions, and Tesla has not documented the interaction. So we do not publish a rule, we do not tell operators to rely on Sentry as a witness, and we print “not recorded” where a receipt would otherwise imply we knew. If your stand’s script tells a guest their car is being recorded, delete that line.

What actually goes wrong

Two documented cases are worth a stand manager’s time, because between them they cover the two failure modes: a driver who treats the car as a toy, and a dispute where nobody kept a record.

In July 2020 at the La Cantera Resort in San Antonio, a valet crashed a guest’s Model S while using the car’s launch mode — the “Cheetah Stance” crouch — and TeslaCam recorded it. The owner had not enabled Valet Mode. The footage is the only reason anyone knows what happened (The Drive, Electrek). Valet Mode’s power reduction is aimed squarely at this, and it was switched off.

The second case is the evidentiary one. A valet crashed a customer’s Model 3 Performance into two parked cars and claimed Autopilot had engaged itself; to get at the vehicle’s own data, the owner ended up paying $1,300 for an independent EDR pull (Teslarati). Nobody in the chain held a custody record, so the truth had to be bought out of the car after the fact. That is the gap a closed custody window fills — not by preventing anything, but by existing before it is needed.
